How Much Does Viagra Cost?

Question:

I realize that prices for prescription medications vary from one retailer to another, but can you give me an idea of the average current (mid-2019) price for a 50-milligram dose — the recommended starting dose — of Viagra. Chuck G., Dubuque, IA

  1. Answer:

You’re right about variations in price from one supplier to another, but the variations usually aren’t as great as you might think. Another important point to consider is the number and dose-level of your Viagra purchase. Pharmacies and other prescription drug retailers usually charge the same price for the same number of Viagra tablets, regardless of those tablets’ strength.

In other words, 10 Viagra tablets of 100 milligrams each will cost you the same (or nearly the same) as 10 tablets of 50 milligrams each. You need not be a math genius to see that buying 100-milligram tablets and then splitting them gives you twice the number of 50-milligram doses for essentially the same price.

A recent price check of Viagra prices at three major pharmacy retail chains and also at eDrugstore.com indicates that the average price for a 50-milligram dose of Viagra is $42.07. The average price for 10 Viagra 100-milligram tablets is $841.33, which when divided by 20 comes out to about $42.07 per 50-milligram dose.

If you choose to buy 10 tablets of 50 milligrams each, it would still cost you an average of $841.33, but your cost per dose would double.
