Will Viagra Cure My Erectile Dysfunction?

Question:

Is Viagra a cure for erectile dysfunction? Or will I need to take the drug whenever I want to have sex for the rest of my life?

    Hi Brent!

Viagra is not a cure for erectile dysfunction. It optimizes blood flow to the penis for four to five hours so that it is easier for you to get and keep an erection hard and long-lasting enough for sexual intercourse. When the effects of the drug wear off, your erection problems return. However, if you take proactive measures to improve your lifestyle in the early stages of ED, you may be able to regain normal erectile function and no longer need the help that Viagra provides.

Such measures include eating a healthy diet, which is high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat protein, and steering clear of fast foods that offer little nutritive value and are high in unhealthy fats and calories.

Other positive steps you can take include losing excess weight, quitting smoking, making exercise part of your daily routine, and keeping alcohol consumption to a minimum. If you suffer from diabetes, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, or other health conditions that can lead to ED, you should work with your doctor to manage these conditions so they don’t interfere with your love life.

    Thanks,
